A rock-climbing adventure exploring the exciting rock faces and challenging climbs of El Chorro and the surrounding region, north of Malaga. Here you will find the challenge you are looking for. There are over 1,000 routes to choose from in El Chorro alone, so you’ll find climbs that will challenge you, whatever your ability - and leave Spain enlightened, exhausted and ready for more.
Day 1: Arrive in Malaga
Welcome to Andalusia, and more specifically Malaga, an energetic and vibrant 2,800 year old city that acts as the gateway to Spain’s famous “Costa del Sol”. We will collect you from the airport and head north, into the green, sun-baked countryside - and up into the mountains. Your destination (and your home for the next three days) is El Chorro, a village in the mountains above Malaga that has become one of the world’s most famous rock climbing locations, thanks to its proximity to the Gorge of the Gaitanes. You’ll settle into your accommodation, meet your fellow climbers - and with the help of our guides and local experts, and start planning your climbing for the next couple of days (you might even get your first experience of the rock face if there’s time). Night: Hotel in El Chorro.
Day 2-3: Two days of rock climbing in El Chorro
These two days you start climbing in earnest. With over 1,000 different routes across the widest variety of difficulties - whether you’re a complete beginner or a veteran wanting to tackle something that’ll really make you sweat, there are so many climbs for you. The more challenging sections feature highly technical wall routes, athletic ascents up columns or “chorreras,” and some inclines that approach a breathtaking 90 degrees. Alternately, build your skills and confidence on one of the less demanding routes. Whatever your preference, all necessary guidance and training will be provided by seasoned professionals. In the evening, return to your half-board accommodation in the village, and sample a little of the relaxed Andalusian way of life. Night: Hotel in El Chorro.
Day 4: Villanueva del Rosario, home of 'the toughest climb in the world'
After breakfast, we say farewell to El Chorro before driving east to the beautiful white-walled town of Villanueva del Rosario, famous for its olive oil, rolling wheat fields - and incredible rock formations. You’ll have a day to explore the caves, hollows, ravines and cleft faces, some of which climb 300 metres above the surrounding landscape. Depending on your skill level and weather conditions, you’ll also get the chance to climb in some of the most demanding conditions you’ll find on this trip. (Nearby is the 270-foot route of overhanging stamina climbing known as Chilam Balam, internationally famous as perhaps the toughest climb in the entire world). You’ll also have the option of sampling a few of the 200+ climbs of nearby Los Vados - or explore the crags (primarily 6a-6b difficulty) of Alfacar. When the climbing is done, a short trip to Granada, your accommodation for the night, where you will have time to enjoy the free tapas that they serve with your drink! Night: Hotel in Granada.
Day 5: Granada, Malaga .. and home.
After breakfast you’ll have the chance to enjoy Granada, a majestic and historic city at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and home of the Alhambra Palace, an imposing 800 year old Moorish citadel that attracts millions of visitors every year. Then, as the day fades, we will head to Malaga airport, if there is time; explore the city or if all energy is spent it is time to catch your connecting flight home.
