This cycle challenge is 100% on road, designed especially with road bikers in mind. We start cycling in Loei and end in Nakhon Phanom for 606 km of riding in six cycling days. We will cover over 100km on average each day, which is an chievable distance as the roads are smooth and flat. Your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty.
Overall, this scenic ride on smooth tarmac provides us with continuous river views where we can see rapids, waterfalls, or sandy islets, depending on the water levels. The fertile shores of the Mekong are used to cultivate vegetables, and the waters are used for breeding fish in pens. There will be many colourful Buddhist temples along the way as well as a quirky statue park that has to be seen to be believed. We will be staying in small guesthouses as there are limited hotels, but this will only add to the authenticity of your ride!
Day 1: Arrival
Upon arrival, you meet with the guide for an exciting trip briefing, equipment check and a dinner at a local restaurant to start off your culinary exploration of the Thai cuisine.
Day 2: Fly to Loei - Chiang Khan
We’ll get up early to catch our flight and arrive in Loei by 11:30am. Transfer from the aiport and have lunch at which point the bikes will be waiting and ready for us to start cycling. Day 4: Sang Kom - Nong Khai
Only one hill today and it is a short one before the terrain flattens out. Today we reach the city of Nong Khai, featuring Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge before stopping for a break at Nong Pla Buck, an area known for giant catfish that dwell alongside the Mekong river. Giant cat fish here can grow up to almost 3 metres and it's the world largest freshwater fish in the Guinness Book of World Record. Afterwards, we will pay a visit to the local giant sculpture park before settling in a local hotel in Nong Khai town. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Distance: 91km
Day 5: Nong Khai - Beung Kan
A long day of cycling lies ahead as we follow the bends of the Mekong and it is where the river runs its deepest. Following the bends of the Mekong river region, we will experience first-hand the region’s beauty. If the luck is on our side, we may even get a chance to see the Naga fireballs phenomenon over the river. Glowing balls are alleged to naturally rise from the water high into the air and the phenomenon is named after the legendary creatures said to live in the Mekong. In the evening, we reach a hotel in Bueng Kan where we will spend the night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Distance: 140km
Day 6: Beung Kan - Ban Paeng
After a good night of rest we once again have a great distance to cover today but again with a pleasant cycle on flat roads, we will pass through rural Thai villages while pedalling along the riverbanks to Ban Paeng for another night of authentic Thai experience.
